Does Sterling Silver Tarnish?

Does Sterling Silver Tarnish?

Yes—sterling silver tarnishes. But contrary to what many people believe, tarnish is not a sign of poor quality. In fact, authentic sterling silver naturally reacts with elements in the air, particularly sulfur and moisture, creating a darker surface layer over time.

It’s simply part of owning a real precious metal.

At Sincerely Chain Co., we often think of sterling silver the way we think about leather, linen, or wood: materials that develop character through use and time. Some people love the soft patina that silver develops naturally, while others prefer the bright reflective finish of freshly polished silver. Both are beautiful.

The good news is that sterling silver is also incredibly easy to maintain. A polishing cloth, gentle silver cleaner, or even regular wear can help restore brightness. In fact, jewelry worn often tends to tarnish less than pieces left sitting unworn in a drawer.

Of course, you can’t wear all your jewelry at once, so some pieces will naturally spend time stored away. Minimizing tarnish while in storage can make a surprisingly large difference and save time on future polishing and cleaning. We recommend storing sterling silver in tarnish-reducing pouches along with anti-tarnish tabs to help slow oxidation and preserve shine.

Both can be found in our Jewelry Cleaning & Care Guide.

This is one of the quiet differences between sterling silver and disposable jewelry. Real silver evolves—but it doesn’t lose its worth. It can be polished, repaired, worn for decades, and passed on.

At Sincerely Chain Co., we believe that’s part of the beauty.

Real materials age gracefully.
Sincerely,
Sincerely Chain Co.
